Please describe your role and responsibilities at that position?
I am responsible for working with PGA TOUR current partners when they want to engage with a PGA TOUR athlete. We work with the client on their criteria and closely with agents on a player’s interest. I work on player programs and benefits identifying ways to streamline the process. The Pro-Am Enhancement program created a better experience for both player and amateur while playing in a Pro-Am by capturing and sharing information ahead of time. The Pro-Am is a valuable asset for our tournaments and this program elevates the experience and provides business connections. Our team creates key assets for agents and players to use when looking to show value to current or potentially new partners.
What did you study in college and how did your educational background shape your career in the sports industry?
During my college years, I pursued studies in business and communications. These two areas of focus have significantly shaped my career trajectory, leading me to roles in both marketing and communications. I have excelled in account management and relationship building, while also leveraging my creativity and marketing skills to achieve success.
Can you share the key milestones in your career that led you to your current position in the sports industry?
I wanted to take a moment to share a bit about my journey in the golf industry and how I ended up working with the PGA TOUR, something that has been a long-time dream of mine. Ever since I was a child, I’ve had a deep passion for golf. This love for the game motivated me to pursue a career in the golf industry, and I’ve been fortunate enough to work my way up through various golf companies over the years. I started at more entry-level positions, but with hard work and dedication, I quickly advanced in my roles. Back in 2015, I set a goal for myself to join the PGA TOUR, and I’m thrilled to say that I achieved that goal. Prior to joining the TOUR, I worked as a Marketing Manager for PING Golf, where I had the opportunity to create and launch numerous products, manage costs, and exceed sales goals. After that, I moved to Dynamic Brands, where I managed all social media, PR, and marketing efforts. My dream became a reality when I joined the PGA TOUR to work in the merchandising team in 2015. Since then, I’ve been focused on developing my leadership skills and learning as much as I can about the various aspects of the company. I’m incredibly grateful to be in my third role at the PGA TOUR, and I continue to grow and learn every day.
What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a woman in the sports business, and how have you overcome them?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced in the sports business, particularly in the golf industry, is not being taken seriously because of my gender. To overcome this, I have embraced these challenges and dedicated myself to becoming highly knowledgeable in the industry. By working extremely hard and continuously educating myself, I have been able to demonstrate my expertise and earn the respect of my peers.
Balancing a career is demanding. How do you manage a work -life balance? What strategies have worked well for you?
I wanted to share a concept that has been very meaningful to me in my journey as a working mom and wife. Rather than striving for a work-life balance, I prefer to think of it as work-life integration. This perspective allows me to proudly embrace both my career and my family roles without feeling like one has to be sacrificed for the other. Setting clear boundaries for work hours and family time is fundamental to achieving this integration. By doing so, I can ensure that my family sees they are my priority while also dedicating myself to my career. Communication plays a crucial role in maintaining this harmony. By prioritizing top projects and working diligently, I can effectively manage both aspects of my life. This approach has been incredibly effective for me, demonstrating to both my family and my colleagues that they are equally important. I believe that with clear communication and thoughtful prioritization, we can all achieve a harmonious integration of our personal and professional lives.
How important is mentorship for women in the sports industry? Have you had mentors or role models who played a significant role in your career and can give some details?
I believe that mentorship is crucial, particularly in the sports industry, which is predominantly male-dominated. The mentors I have had have played a pivotal role in developing my leadership skills, balancing work and family priorities, and advancing in my roles. I have relied on my mentors to navigate difficult conversations and advocate for myself in promotions and leadership opportunities. For instance, the TOUR recently established company wide workstreams in three key areas based on employee survey results. I volunteered for the Communications Workstream, and the company requested those interested in leading the group to submit a brief summary of their qualifications. Out of over 200 participants, I was one of 12 selected to lead this significant group.
In a male-dominated industry, do you feel women are given equal opportunities? What steps do you think can be taken to promote gender equality in the sports industry?
In a male-dominated industry, I believe there is still a gap in equality, particularly within the sports sector. Women often face challenges in being taken seriously and receiving equal opportunities. To address this, I have consistently advocated for myself and other women, emphasizing the importance of mentorship and support networks. Mentorship has been crucial in developing my leadership skills, balancing work and family priorities, and navigating difficult conversations. To promote gender equality in the sports industry, it is essential to focus on the work being done rather than the gender of the person doing it. Additionally, creating opportunities for women to take on leadership roles and actively encouraging their participation in key projects can help bridge the gap.
What aspects of your work in the sports industry do you enjoy the most? What parts do you find the most challenging?
I enjoy relationship building and account management the most in my role. Collaborating with other teams on projects is very fulfilling, as it allows me to outline attainable and measurable goals, as well as stretch goals. The most challenging part is navigating the male-dominated environment and outlining a career path to advance within the company.
What advice do you have for young women aspiring to build a successful career in the sports industry?
For young women aspiring to build a successful career in the sports industry, my advice is to focus on networking and demonstrating dedication and hard work. Building a strong network within the industry can open doors to various opportunities, as many roles are often secured through connections and relationships. Additionally, showcasing your commitment and work ethic will help you stand out and advance in your career.
Any fun facts or interesting things you’d like the world to learn about you? Favorite food, hobbies, pet peeves, etc.?
I have three wonderful children, and we share a passion for the outdoors, particularly golf. I prioritize fitness for both physical and mental health, with running being my favorite activity. I also enjoy cooking and often involve my children in the process, with our favorite recipe being baking banana bread. We love to travel and spend quality time with family. One of my most cherished golf memories is achieving a hole-in-one at TPC Sawgrass, with my ten-year-old son as my witness.
