Please describe your role & responsibilities at that position?
I curate an educational curriculum, secure presenters and manage onsite the execution of the 6 Regional and 1 National Conferences held by USA Gymnastics.
What did you study in college and how did your educational background shape your career in the sports industry?
Kinesiology – Teacher Prep at Indiana University. Having a background in education assists me in my current role with the knowledge of curriculum development. Moreso, my specific roles in the gymnastics industry as a gymnastics coach, club owner, equipment supplier and official over time have provided me with a large scope of understanding of the sport. This knowledge gained over time has best prepared me for the role I am in at this time.
Can you share the key milestones in your career that led you to your current position in the sports industry?
As noted in the previous question, the preparation that has put me in my current role has been a combination of many previous positions and experiences.
Including: College Cheerleader, Physical Education Teacher, Gymnastics Coach, Instructor, Official and Private Club Owner, Gymnastics Equipment Supplier, Teacher Trainer and of course a mom of a gymnast.
What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a woman in the sports business, & how have you overcome them?
I can’t really speak to that. I feel that any of the challenges I have had are not exclusive to being female. Hard work and communication overcome most any challenge.
Balancing a career is demanding. How do you manage a work-life balance? What strategies have worked well for you?
Being an efficient, expedited worker has allowed me to manage my workload. Also, staying on task and avoiding distractions aids in managing workload.
How important is mentorship for women in the sports industry? Have you had mentors or role models who played a significant role in your career and can give some details?
Yes, I have had mentors and role models that have played a significant role in my career. I can not say there were any “assigned” mentors, however individuals can pick up on people who want to learn and grow so often these “role models” find you. If you show a spark, good follow through and a genuine passion for what you do they will often gravitate to you. I encourage everyone to try to take every situation as an opportunity to learn and grow from others. Whether it be a positive experience or negative there can be some growth one has by “learning” from it from watching the lead of those we admire.
In a male-dominated industry, do you feel women are given equal opportunities? What steps do you think can be taken to promote gender equality in the sports industry?
Overall in all sports, It does feel that women are given more execution tasks while men are given more decision making tasks. I really can’t speak to how to promote more gender equality. I do feel that in our sport there are more equal opportunities.
What aspects of your work in the sports industry do you enjoy the most? What parts do you find the most challenging ?
I am most rewarded in watching people grow as educators. I find getting people to read their emails and respond to be the biggest challenge….but I am certain that’s true in any industry. 🙂
What advice do you have for young women aspiring to build a successful career in the sports industry?
Always look to learn! Make many connections and be approachable.
What are your long term personal goals that you still want to achieve both business wise and personal?
Enjoy each and every day and do my best at whatever task is provided to me.
